I lived in Bath for 3 years while attending uni there. The great thing about it is that the train station is right at the bottom of the high street (what Americans call main street), so you literally get of the train and you are there. Just be prepared for a lot of up hill walking!

For most people the #1 attraction is the Roman baths, you should give yourself at least two hours to tour them. Then grab a Cornish pasty and head up to the abbey where there are almost always street performances going on. Further up you will find Jane Austen's house, which is now a museum that is quite popular with American tourists. There are plenty of small shops and pubs to keep you occupied. For a bit of fun I would recommend the Ghost Tour which starts at about 8pm most evenings outside the Pultney Arms.

To get there make your way to Paddington station and catch one of the First Great Western trains. Its about an 80 minute journey an they only stop at 3 other stations on the way. Other services exist but are much slower. Buying your tickets in advance can save a lot of money, look for tickets at http://www.thetrainline.com/.

You can also go to any of the railway stations to get the tickets.

In Bath there are the Roman baths, the fashion museum and assembly rooms and many more, I would say that all museums I went to there were worth visiting, but if you go just one day, make a good selection.

Just wandering round the town is also nice, shopping is good. There are many small shops, some old malls and a covered market.
