Go to the vet. The OTC stuff at grocery stores is more dangerous and it usually doesn't work as well. Frontline and Capstar are great. They can be used together. One kills them quickly and the other kills for a month. Also treat your house and yard.

Get the dog a monthly flea treatment from the vet, not the cheap one from the pet store.
Then treat the entire house with a light dusting of boric acid powder, available at the 99 Cent store and elsewhere as a bug powder. Look on the list of ingredients to see if it is boric acid. Brush it into carpets and upholstery and bedding. This is not dangerous to people or pets (except pet bugs). It dehydrates the fleas and they die. Between these two, you should be able to get rid of fleas in the house. The dogs will still pick some up outside, but they won't last long. This worked for me even though this was a very bad year for fleas.

You can get some capstar from your vet, after taking just 1 pill, the fleas will start falling off dead in just a few minutes, then use Frontline or Advantage. The OTC stuff does not work and is not safe. Be sure to treat your house and yard at the sometime. Flea shampoo, dips and powders not longer work and will dry their skin which will make then scratch and that could lead to a skin infection.

Use of Advantage or Frontline flea products is the best thing. You also need to treat the environment to help get rid of the fleas. Such as treating the yard and house with appropriate flea treatments. Also when bathing your pet use a shampoo that is compatible with flea treatment being used. Alot of shampoos strip the flea product off the pet. Avoid over the counter products such as Hartz, etc. They do not work.

There are lots of items, topical, available. Talk to your vet in your area. Ticks can cause some serious diseases.
We have been adding a nutritional supplement (www.juiceplus.com/+Lb53116) to our dog food for about 2 years and have absolutely not had a flea problem. And my dogs like to go to the park for runs. When we get home we check them for ticks and fleas and have been very happy.
We do spray our yard at the beginning of the flea season also.

You must not only treat the dog you must treat the environment. Use a product that your vet recommends as well as putting a flea treatment on you floors twice a month .I use a product I get from Wal-mart. It is a carpet deodorizer as well as a flea powder. And don't forget flea collars

TRY JOHN PAUL MITCHELL PET " TEA TREE" SHAMPOO FOR PETS ... GREAT STUFF IF YOU WANT AN ALTERNATIVE TO NATURAL PEST CONTROL, THE STUFF DOESN'T HAVE ANY PESTICIDES THAT YOU FIND IN PRODUCTS LIKE FRONTLINE, COLLARS, AND SOME COMMERCIAL FLEA SOAPS AND DIPS. THIS STUFF IS ALL NATURAL, AND IS GREAT TO RELIEVE HOT SPOTS TOO. I TRIED THIS ON MY DOG AND I LOVED IT , IT ALSO HELPED WITH RELEASING MOST OF THE SHEDDING, JUST LATHER AND LET STAND IN FUR ABOUT 5 MINUTES BEFORE RINSING.

ALSO VACUUM YOUR HOME FREQUENTLY IF THE DOG IS AN INDOOR DOG, YOU MIGHT WANT TO PURCHASE A FLEA COLLAR THAT YOU CAN CUT IN PIECES TO PLACE IN THE BAGS TO HELP KILL THE FLEAS AS THEY R IN THE BAG.

IF THE DOG IS OUTDOORS, SPRAY TREAT THE AREA OUTDOORS WITH A PESTICIDE YOU CAN FIND IN THE PET STORE OR HOME CENTER,
USUALLY WILL HAVE TO KEEP YOUR PET AWAY FROM THE AREA TILL IT DRIES THOUGH.

I found a remedy in Prevention magazine. Sounds silly, but it works, I used it. Buy a bog of Borax (20 mule team, not Boraxo) and table salt. Sprinkle the Borax thru the house on the carpet. then sprinkle the salt on the carpet, leave it for maybe a whole day. Then vacuum it up. It works, and you usually don't have to treat the dog. Good luck!

In addition to all these great answers, if you feed your dog lamb and rice dog food, it will help deter fleas on the dogs, Crazy sounding, I know, but it's true.
