I've had a stiff neck (hard to turn left and right) for about a week - gradually getting worse. I've had this before, and eventually it goes away, but it's very annoying. I don't have any other symptoms except the stiff neck. Any idea what could be causing this? Could I have just slept on it wrong & it just takes it awhile to go away?

I complained to my doc last week about pain in my left arm (inside) and she tested my arm with a little pizza cutter shaped wheel with points on it and said it was coming from my neck. She asked if I used a pillow to sleep and I said a very thin one and she said to use a larger firmer one if I was a side or back sleeper because the neck needs more support when we sleep. The pain is going away. I also get pains in my neck when I use my trifocals on the internet and had to buy special glasses for the computer.

It could have been whatever was in your drink, or you could have slept with your neck at an odd angle. If you slept on a hard surface (not sure how sick you were) then that might have caused it too, lack of support for your head. And if that hard surface were cold, such as a tile floor or bathtub, that would also contribute. Use a heat pack or warm water and gently strech the muscles, otherwise you might get headaches to go with your stiff neck.

There is a defined muscular contracture which causes restriction of the motion of the articular surfaces of the vertebrae.Usually more predominant on one side. The restriction is to prevent any pressure of the nerves in that area. This is most often brought about by change in the body structure. Any addition stress or strain to the affected area will cause the irritation of the area and the extra muscle tension becomes the result. Untreated, this condition usually progresses. The intensified symptoms will normally cause more problems as age increases.. and the condition worsens. Is always best to find the cause and take care of it.

My grandfather had the same problem and I advised him that maybe it was just due to his improper posture when he sleeps. But it persisted for a month or so and so it prompted us to seek medical advise. He had tests done like MRI and CT SCAN.Test results revealed there are problems with the nerves of his neck and now he is underging physical therapy.
