Actually, when cats do that it's a symptom of round (or Pin-) worms. You can get some Earlyworm and follow the directions, or take the cat to the vet's. Cat's anal sacs do not need to be expressed, but on occassion they can become impacted, and an abcess may form around the anal area. I've had cats for years, and never seen an anal abcess, so I would assume it's not particularly common. Of course, many people don't even see abcess or other health problems in thier animals, or misinterpret what they do see, as you have done here. Treat the worms and the scooting will stop- the worms cause intense itching in anal area.

You can do it yourself, but most people prefer to have a vet do it or a groomer do it, because it's very messy and it really stinks. It has to be done a certain way, so that you don't do any damage, if you don't know how. I would have a vet or a groomer do it the first time, to show you how it's done, then if you prefer to do it yourself after you see it done, then you will know how. It is not expensive and does not take long to do!

BY ALL MEANS- don't do it without first being properly assisted. If you rupture them (and yes, they are ruptured VERY easily) they will have to be removed by a vet via surgery. If you rupture them and don't take the animal into the vet, that area is VERY susceptable to infection, and where they are located in the anus has a very heavy blood flow, and if the infection enters the blood stream, it could result in death.
It's not hard to do, you just have to know how to properly do it.

its something you need to be SHOWN how to do. I hope youve seen it before though or rather SMELLED it before because it is the most godawful stink in the world! As your vet tech or groomer to show you how, its really not something you can explain on the internet, so dont take any advice off the internet either!

The vet will show you how and there are good books at the library if you are too far from one. I used to do it to my little dog (they are prone to this malady) when he was finished with his bath in the bath tub.

Yes, but if you don't know how, have your vet or groomer show you the proper way to do it so you don't hurt your dog.

1)pay someone else to do it because it reeks!!

2)prevent it by feeding more raw meaty bones - firmer stools will drain the sacs naturally.

Ummm ... are you sure you want to do that yourself?

Your vet or groomer could do it for you, and if you REALLY want to do it yourself, I'd advise you to ask them to show you how it's done.
