Any breed that is waiting for you in a shelter. You can interact with them and find out which ones are more cuddly and people oriented.
Please don't buy a cat from a shop or breeder. There are plenty of lap cats waiting for you in shelters.

Persians are notorious lap cats, but if want a lap cat, you will probably have to go to a shelter and observe the older kittens or adults, and see which ones are the most affectionate and laid back. Every breed has the potential of being a lap cat. Good luck.

Not a kitten: kittens have tons of energy! Tons!
You want an adult cat. Maybe older.
There isn't a particular breed that will be a good lapcat. That's more a matter of personality. Every cat is different. Go to a shelter, and ask the volunteers if they have a recommendation, as they may know the cats they have at the time. But I would think that any older cat would be quite happy to be a lapcat, especially if they are well-socialized.
Having said all that, I will say that my long-haired cat seems to be somewhat lazier than my other cats. She doesn't really want to sit in laps, though. But then I'm never in such a position! She does want to sit on my keyboard :D

I don't think there is any particular breed which is a lap cat - it just depends on the characteristics of the cat - I have had a tabby who was very much a lap cat but I also have a tabby who won't even sit on the same sofa as me (although I'm not saying he is not loving in his own way). I have a pure white cat who loves sitting on people but I have known very aloof white cats. I have owned 3 Persians (your comment about squashed faces) and none of them have been interested in laps ....... there is no way of knowing. Go to an animal sanctuary and ask the people working there which cat they recommend for your particular circumstances.

I don't know much about cat breeds-but I know one thing! Fat cats make good, lazy lap cats! I have one-and he's a really good lap cat! I'm sorry if this didn't help, but you could look up cat breeds on the net if you want.

Any cat, especially strays.
Medium hair and long hair cats tend to leave a lot of cat hair behind for you to remember them by... so if you're looking for a cat that won't "give you the coat off its back," then go for any shorthair cat or one of those "naked" looking cats. Not sure of the breed name, but it looks like it's inside out... think: Dr. Evil's cat, Mr. Wigglesworth, from Austin Powers movies.

I say rescue one at the shelter. You'll feel good about yourself.
BUT.. Persians and Himilayans are known to be calmer. They're bred to "sit on a pillow looking pretty" so they tend to be less hyper and enjoy laying around (on your lap perhaps?). They're perfectly suited to being indoor cats.
While he's on your lap though, you have to brush them everyday. But they're worth it. They're GORGEOUS!
