I was outside and stumbled up on a rat and it freaked out and backed away skreeching and acted like it was going to lunge at me a couple of times before it ran away, and then about a minute later it appeared again and ran after me!! so i just stepped in and closed my sliding door and it start scratching the glass skreeching!! LOL that was crazy. sorry for the stupid question. i just have never been attacked by a rat and thought it was funny...

Sounds like it was trying to protect something to me. Either it's nest or itself.
Rats will make "schreeching" noises to make other rats aware of danger, so that's pretty normal.
Rats have had centuries of conditioning against human behaviour so they're not as scared of us as people think, they are very adept at picking up our emotions and predicting how we will behave, so unless you were coming across as threatening the rat could very well think it could scare you off,.........and it was right!

haha that is actually quite funny. i have never heard of a rat attacking altho im sure its happened b4. i had a rat once and it got out of its cage, i dont know how but some how clawed its way into my mouse cage and killed it. it did the same screching at me wen i tried to put it back in its own cage and tried to bite me...fast little thing. i had to get rid of it cos it just went crazy, id only had it for a week... rats can be cute but some are just plan scary. thanks for posting your story it actually made me giggle :) i would star your question but im all starred out for the day :( lol good luck n i hope the rats not hanging around...

Maybe it was a mama rat and you inadvertently came too close to her babies?
That's the only reason I can think of for why the rat went ballistic on you.

Maybe it had rabies.
Rats are the ultimate survivalists with a keen sense of self.
Rats are intelligent and if raised properly can make fabulous pets.
