What, on average, is the largest breed of dog? I am talking an average of both weight and height, but height is more important than weight.

So, what breed would that be?

Edit: Everyone accusing me of "not doing research" are sort of amusing me.

What do you think I'm doing RIGHT NOW?! = O!!!

Additional edit: I am not looking for an "intimidating" dog, per say. I am not interested in Rotties, doberman or Pittbuls, while Rotties are in fact big dogs.

I am thinking Great Dane, now. They seem to have the nicest temperment of the mentioned dogs.

The largest (tallest) dog is the Great Irish Wolfhound. My sister had one and its was gentle giant, but a bit clumsy to have inside.
But they are not the heaviest though, I believe that label belongs to the Saint Bernard. A cousin had two that weighed 83kg and 86kg (around 180 - 190 lbs)
Hope that helps.

Great Danes are often referred to as a "Heartbreak" breed because they oftentimes live short lives and it is not unusual that they have serious diseases or disorders but most people that get a Dane will stay with the breed despite that.
The tallest, on average, are Irish Wolfhounds. I rarely see that breed anywhere though I really like the personalities of the few I have seen.
Weight and Height considered, a large breed with a large weight would be an English Mastiff.

My guess would be some kind of Mastiff or a Great Dane.

If you want to get a dog, you need to do research on the breeds that you are interested in. You need to figure out if the breed fits your wants and needs. You cannot just choose a breed by it's size, every breed is different and not all breeds are right for everyone. My husband and I wanted a large breed dog, but after doing some research on different breeds, the breed that ended up being perfect for us is the APBT which is a medium breed dog. You can't just go on size. Like I said, I would think that a Mastiff or Great Dane would be the largest, but Irish Wolf Hounds and St. Bernards are really big as well.

Good luck! : )

I am curious as to why you want the largest breed...They need obedience training from the get go. All dogs do, regardless of size.
My St Bernard is huge, and he barely fits in my back seat, He is very strong, yet a gentle giant who loves people and children.
Also keep in mind that anything done to a large dog costs alot. I just had mine washed & nails clipped...I tossed a $100 at her.
The vet costs are higher, as they need more Rx than the average size dog, and for surgery, they charge by the weight of your large breed dog for anesthesia. They are expensive to have, and a big commitment. So please don't get a large dog just to get attention...all breeds are cute! The most beautiful, grateful dogs are the ones rescued. There is also a rescue group for every AKC breed
Now you have a large dog for many years, just remember that they need exercise! Make sure of any breed you get, fits into your lifestyle.
I have no regrets having my St Bernard...but before Obedience Training, even as a pup, they are very strong! So hug your dog alot!
GOOD LUCK!

U probably don't wanna hear this but you should check out ur local or semi local pounds. They have big mutt dogs that need good homes :( Be careful though I got my allie dog who was short and chubby and looked to be a beagle and then she grew up and she's about 2 ft and 100lbs! if youre interested in a great dane or something you could check into some great dane rescue facilities?

Always remember adoption > buying. Thx.

the tallest dog is the Irish Wolfhound or the Great Dane. the dog with the biggest mass is the Mastiff, also quite tall too but not as tall as the Great Dane.

Irish Wolfhound is the tallest. Great Dane is a pretty close second, I think. English Mastiff, Neopolitan Mastiff, Leonberger, Newfoundland, St. Bernard are all heavy breeds.

But why would you choose a breed on size alone, knowing nothing else about it? Please do some research!

Why do you want the largest dog available? There's so much more that goes into choosing a breed than size or looks. Temperament, health, exercise requirements, expenses... just to name a few.

BTW, heaviest is the English Mastiff but tallest is the Irish Wolfhound.

The Saint Bernard is a very large dog, so is the great Dane and the Newfoundland, but I believe the great Dane would be the one for you
