That is part of an argument that lead to several wars
Some believe the God as in the Old testament was Vengeful and angry. But they believe it is a different god in the New testament with lest fire flood and destruction.
This belief lead to the knights of the Vatican being sent out, to show people the error of their ways by putting entire towns and cities to death( including babies and animals).
How about that for persuasion

It does not say interior the NIV bible. i'm guessing his first reaction replaced into to start up the Morton Salt company....while it rains, it pours..... Genesis 19:23-29 23 via the time Lot reached Zoar, the solar had risen over the land. 24 Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens. 25 as a effect he overthrew those cities and the excellent undeniable, which contain all those living interior the cities—and likewise the flowers interior the land. 26 yet Lot's spouse looked returned, and he or she became a pillar of salt. 27 Early the subsequent morning Abraham have been given up and returned to the region the place he had stood earlier the LORD. 28 He looked down in direction of Sodom and Gomorrah, in direction of all the land of the undeniable, and he observed dense smoke becoming from the land, like smoke from a furnace. 29 So while God destroyed the cities of the undeniable, he remembered Abraham, and he introduced Lot out of the disaster that overthrew the cities the place Lot had lived.

He is referring to Lot's Wife referred to in the Old Testament in Genesis 19, and specifically the pillar of salt can be found in verse 26. I implore that every one reads completely and patiently everything so nothing is taken out of context. I am going to paraphrase, so bare with me please. Thanks :)
Events such as these and other similar found in the Bible use to confuse me as well, and caused doubt in my mind before too, but if you take the time to read the chapter and understand the culture, times, way it is written, context in which it is written, etc... (This is called exegesis in which you take out context out of the Bible not Isagesis where you put your own understanding into scripture); you will understand why this happened. What was happening at the time is that the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were so wicked (in fact the only people who still revered God was Lot, his wife (but not really), and their two daughters), that God in order to prevent the unrighteous from spoiling the righteous children he decided to destroy those cities and everything in them. So turning now to Lot's wife. the Angels of the LORD, had told them all not to look back or they would be swept away -Genesis 19:17. The following fact can also be supported by Luke 17:30-36. Lot's wife brought that upon her self, she looked back not wanting to let go of the unrighteous and wickedness which God was destroying, Jesus specifically said in Luke 17:31-32 to let go of the things of this world. This message is repeated several times in New Testament as well. All of these verses can be better understood even better by studying original languages. New Testament originally in Greek and Old Testament, not sure, but i know for sure some was Hebrew and not sure if other languages involved. Studying this story in the Bible in original language is important because the Bible was indeed translated to English and some meanings mean multiple things in original languages. So this was just some of the information to help answer your question, but please do study more in depth so that no doubt is left what so ever. I do pray this helped you and anyone else who has posted or will read this.
As far as some of these comments about God and Love and Forgiveness, God is the same in both Old and New Testament (Don't have time to go into depth. Sorry!). http://www.gotquestions.org/God-different.html but here is a site that will help.
Peace be with All of You!

You are obviously referring to Lot's wife. When God sent the angels to destroy Sodom, He told Lot to take his family and flee the city, and not to look back. God wants us to flee from evil, not look back and wish we were still involved. Sodom was a very wicked city- filled with every kind of sexual sin. When Lot's wife turned to look back, she was disobeying a direct command of the Lord, and basically saying "I don't care what God says- I will look back if I want to." We serve a HOLY God. When He gives you a direct command, we better listen. He has the power to give life and take it away, and He has the right to do so. He created us, and He has certain expectations of the people He created. A child who is willfully disobedient to a parent who gives them a strict rule to obey for their own safety deserves to be punished by a parent- not given free reign to do whatever he wants. Otherwise, it would be obvious that the parent really didn't care about the child to begin with. God is no different. But in the Old Testament, He had to be a little more harsh, so that people understood He wasn't just kidding around when He said DON'T DO IT.

He told them to leave the city and not look back (or the would become a pillar of salt-don't know why salt). Looking back expressed her desire to return or sorry that they were leaving. He told many people to do or not do things. Some listened, some didn't. All received according to their action/decission. It is still true today. He has told us what we need/should do. We choose to do it or not do it, but today, we can ask His forgivness. If we mean it, He forgives. We don't get away without paying for what we have done, but we are forgiven.

God exhibited much patience (sparing a city for 10 good people) and his anger (destruction of Sodom etc.).
Lot's wife turned back to look at the city of Sodom which signifies spiritually, that she was clinging to the past and unwilling to turn completely away. You can't make progress with God as long as you are holding on to pieces of your old life. No man can serve two masters.

Some bad things were happening and she didn't have time to pause and turn around and look at it. She did anyway, and she got in the way of what was happening. If she had kept going, she would have barely escaped, the same as Lot.

It's a punishment. Punishment is very important for it imposes discipline and prevents chaos. It varies accordingly in every situation but the purpose is very much the same. So whether you think that punishment is so grave or so petty, still the purpose is the same. It is to make you abide the law. Sometimes it is better to put your trust or not at all, explanations can only leads you to trouble.

God loves us, but he hates sin. And if you want to hold on to sin then you must be destroyed with sin. what god is trying to say here is that we must not hold on to the world when god has called you to follow him follow him because we may not be given a second chance and in her case she looked back and was destroyed, like I said god finds no pleasure in the death of the wicked, But God will destroy sin once and for all.
