i was reading in a book, that when there was a hijacking situation, mother was doing that

She may not have paid for a seat for the child if children under 5 were free.
Mom took 3 babies on a Grayhound free and didn't have any place to put us so another passenger held one and she held 2 for thousands of miles. Usually you can find a seat to put them on even if you didn't pay.

I wouldn't read any more to it than what the first person said. Any mother of a young child will do whatever she has to do on a plane to keep the child occupied, calm and happy. It's a matter of sanity for everyone, and if it takes holding the child on her lap, then that is what she has to do.

it's love. wanting to keep her child as close to her as possible, so noone can take him/her away. the only thing she can do to keep the child safe

maybe the kid's scared or she wants the kid as close to her as possible. idk
