This graduate student isn't you, is it? Hope not. No matter who it's for, usually all that's needed is an office suite and graphics program along with the common antivirus and anti spyware programs.

You must be planning for the future. A graduate student would know what was needed by experience. In your case I would definitely add a good spell checker, if for no other reason than to help you become a graduate student.

It depends on your field. A biostatistician may want to have a Linux distribution on a partition. Some fields are more focused on PC specialized software. I'd talk to a more senior student in your field of study.
If you want to cover all bases, I'd get Microsoft XP SP2 and Microsoft Office (student version) and partition your drive to dual boot to Linux Ubuntu(free) with Open Office(free).

It depends on what your major was and what your budget was.
Microsoft Office Pro
Front Page
Adobe products
Desktop publishing programs
Specialized data base program
ACT
It depends on what I said above. Some people only have a few hundred dollars some have thousands!
