Why?

Hi Wisdom.

If I sin, that night (or when I realize I sinned) I will repent & ask God for forgiveness. He will forgive me; I know that.

It only takes that one time to be forgiven.

However, being human and therefore weak, I may slip up & make the same mistake again. Therefore, I will repent once again. I will be forgiven again.

I try hard not to sin again, and most times I don't. I know what Jesus wants me to do & not to do. If I sin & realize it, of course I regret it. So, I will repent, with true sorrow in my heart. When I have finished my prayers & talk with God, I feel renewed, able to start again & do it right.

It is up to me to get it right. God is all-loving & forgiving, but it is up to me to be aware of my actions, & to make sure I do not sin again.

I do my best — God does the rest :-)

Peace.

Religious people repent is not "to get it right" but to ask for forgiveness from God.

Every time you did something wrong, then you should repent.

Forgiveness will only be given by God if it is done sincerely.

The indications that the repentance is done sincerely are:
1. We truly regret what we have done;
2. We promise to ourselves that we will not do it again.

The idea of repentance means that you consider the way that you have been going and you decide that it is the wrong way and so you turn around and go in the other direction. It doesn't mean that you just stop doing something and stand still until you do it again. The Apostle Paul gives a picture of what repentance looks like in this passage from Ephesians where he writes about turning from old sinful behaviors and replacing them with new God honoring behaviors.

Ephesians 4:22 ... put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil.

28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

If you find that you have started to go back to your old way of behavior then you stop and go back the other way again whenever it happens.

Its not the quantity but the quality. What I mean is this, repenting in itself means to apologize and turn away from. So lets say you repent for adultery and then turn around and do it again you are not actually repenting.

Well there is the initial repentance of sins. if it is true then you are forgiven. After being forgiven you will inevitably sin again so you confess that sin (to Him in prayer, not some man in black) and are cleansed of it (1John 1:8-9) then if there is a particular sin you fall into alot you have to repent from it. Repentance means turns away from it and turn to God. So alot during a life.

repent means to get rid of it completely so that would mean When you sin and ask Jesus for forgiveness, you're attempting to repent and for me, I still need a little practice but eventually I'll repent. Everyone sins and it takes different amounts of times for different people to repent.

Some things you can overcome easier than others. God surely knew because through Jesus he said that we should forgive 70 x 70 x 70 etc. If we are to repent and ask forgiveness, I am sure God would forgive that often until we get it right.

Why? Because we are still weak, fleshly, humans trying to walk in the Spirit.

If it is pure and honest and from the heart, only one time is all it takes. Why, because God loves you and wants you to love Him back and He is waiting for you to repent.

well, really, for a given sin anyway, you can only truly repent once, because a huge part of repentance is forsaking the sin (meaning you never do it again)
