The Romance languages (sometimes referred to as Romanic languages) are a branch of the Indo-European language family, comprising all the languages that descend from Latin, the language of the Roman Empire. They have more than 700 million native speakers worldwide, mainly in the Americas, Europe, and Africa, as well as in many smaller regions scattered through the world.

Romance languages are languages whose ancestor is Latin. Spanish is mostly derived from Latin, even though it has quite a lot of Arabic and (especially in American varieties) American Indian words in it. Compare Latin and Spanish, and you can see what this means:

ego amo - yo amo
tu amas - tú amas
ille amat - él ama

mensa - mesa
dies - día
mulier - mujer
panis - pan

and so on, and so on.

It is one of the languages derived from Latin. Latin is - or was - the language of all the Roman Empire at one time (now, Latin is ONLY spoken in the Vatican in Italy. So, all languages that are derived from Latin - as once spoken in the Roman Empire, are considered ROMANtic languages... or derivatives of the once Roman language.

They are also called Romanic languages.
