Wolves are much more intelligent than domestic dogs. First off, the origin of all dogs is the wolf. Wolves have evolved over hundreds of thousands of years, physically and mentally. On the other hand, Humans have helped dogs conquer natural selection. Most Physical and Mental traits(intelligence included) of the common wolf are no where to be found in the domestic dog.
To survive in the wild, a wolf has to be both physically and mentally(including intelligence) superior to the common dog.
As a rule, wild animals are usually more intelligent than domestic animals, unless of course the animals are bred for there intelligence.

Wolves have 1/3 larger brain mass than dogs do (about 30 cm. larger than that of a dog of the same size.)
Wolves are considerably more intelligent than dogs, but it is not an intelligence particularly aligned with ours.
A dog's mental development has been arrested in the juvenile stage in order to make them more dependant on man and therefore more manageable. That was part of the domestication process of dogs.
There are times when we see exceptionally smart dogs, but their mental development still ends at the juvenile stage. And though some dogs can be stubborn - it's really not the same as dealing with an adult wolf. The difference would be much like a 14 year old boy acting up in class, and the teacher telling him to go stand in the corner. He might fuss but he would do it. (That would be a dog.) On the other hand, put a 30 year old man in the same situation and you and he will only stand in the corner if he wants to do it. (that would be a wolf.)
Wolves think for themselves, they have their own agendas.
They are certainly MUCH more aware of their environment than dogs.

Wolves and dogs come from the same line, they are both canines. Neither are smarter than the other. Your dog can only be smarter than something else if you teach it etc. But, a wild wolf is going to be smarter and more instinctual in the wild than a domesticated dog would be. But, like I said, neither are smarter than the other, it is the way that you train and raise them. I used to own 3 wolves and one Pit Bull, the Pit Bull and the middle Wolf were smarter than the other two Wolves and any other dog I've known or owned. So, it's just a matter of the dog and it's owners/enviroment.

Wolves and dogs are the same species; basically dogs are wolves that have been selectively bred for centuries. Smartness is really not a good word to use with different breeds and wolves since a dog bred for pointing at birds is certainly better at that then a wolf. As a wild animal, a wolf has to be a generalist to survive and this ability to adapt (thus appearing extra smart) is what people are referring to.

Wolves are smarter in only one way.
Many dogs if they are let out in the wild (like a forest by themselves), will not survive long because they have no hunting skills. Humans have tamed many kinds of dogs to forget what it is to actually looks for there own food.
Wolves of course can hunt by themselves. Even the ones in the zoo sometimes are given a live rabbit so they will not forget hunting skills

Smarter how? Getting through fences? Breaking into chicken coops? Pulling sleds? Catching frisbees? Heeling? Learning to Sit Pretty? Doing agility?
I'd say you'd need to be more specific. They are surely more suited to certain pursuits and less suited to others. And many of those pursuits will have a lot less to do with smart and more to do with motivation and purpose.

No it's about the same...but wolves and wolf crossess tend to have a reputation for a longer lifespan since domesticated animals such as dogs are prone to many sicknesses.

Are monkeys smarter than humans?
The answer to this question is relevant to the answer to your question.
-->Some dogs may be more 'intelligent' than wolves (and visa-versa)
...and quite often 'man' has proven that they are no smarter than a monkey.
