The Greeks were intelligent people with limited resources. I can totally forgive them for assigning deities to the unknown mysteries of the universe, the fickle fates, and the winds of fortune. With all the available resources at hand now, there is no excuse for superstition. It is lame and it furthers nothing except the next batch of sheep. In answer to your question, no, the Greek gods aren't real, but they did have their place in history. As do the gods du jour, who will be ancient history in another 2,000 years. Either that or we will truly devolve.

Speaking as a student of the classical Greek Philosophers/Scientists, Dimocritus probably WAS a polythiestic Hellene. The Classical Period Greeks did not see a conflict between science and religion and often many of the greatest scientific minds (such as Hippocrates who is credited as the Father of Western Medicine) were also devoutly religious.
As for the reality of the Greek Gods, I can only say this....
Yes, the Greek Gods are real for those of us who still worship them. I do not shrink from my belief in my Gods and I will proclaim with others who share my beliefs "I Still Worship Zeus!"

I don't know, did Democritus claim this theory was revealed to him by the gods? If so, we might be onto something.
(Democritus' atoms were assumed to be solid btw, an idea that persisted well into the age of reason).
Peace to you.

You got it, man. LOL
Seriously though, do you think if the library at Alexandria had survived, we would be exploring the stars now, as Carl Sagan asserted?
