in the day she seems fine. i night i get really worried. she cant seem to stop panting. she is 13 - a border collie. and has thyroid conditon that she takes medication for. any thoughts?

Her age makes me think Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) as the first suspicion. Talk to your vet and have her checked for CHF. It may not make sense that "panting = heart problems" but it does - especially heavy panting in the evening but not the morning.
There are medications that can be used to help ease the symptoms of CHF. If your dog does have CHF, be sure to ask your vet about Pimobendan.

It's probably heat. The bed is warm and makes them warm. I have two that do this every night and they're older. Checked out by the vet and they're fine, it's just they're hot. I have a small fan that I turn on that only hits them and it has eliminated the panting.

Older dogs sometimes have difficulty controlling their body temps; therefore they pant excessively. It's a good idea to get your older dog vet checked more frequently than you did when he was young to rule out serious conditions that might be treatable if detected early.

It could be anxiety. Did something happen to scare her in the dark? I agree with the first poster but tonight try paying special attention to her and cuddle her.....See if that helps her.

I think I would call a vet just to be on the safe side.Even it turns out to be nothing, you could set your mind at ease.I hope she is okay.
