If you can't get real maple syrup, try the following:

3 C white sugar
1 C brown sugar
2 C water
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp real maple extract

Combine sugars and water in a sauce pan. Bring to a boil and remove from heat. Add flavoring and stir.

To go fancy you can add nut oil (hazzlenut, walnut, pecan, etc) or use almond extract instead of vanilla. You can also add butter flavoring (real butter tends to float to the top once it cools down), but my family already butters pancakes and waffles.

Sometimes when money's an issue I'll mix real maple syrup with this artificial stuff for a good compromise.

Well, now that I am all grown up I prefer pure maple syrup.
But as a kid growing I loved the sugar syrup my mom made. We were pretty poor and could not afford store bought syrup, so my mom would take sugar, put it in a pot with some other ingredients and make syrup. It was sort of like Karo syrup but not as thick.

I've tried:
Blackberry syrup, which wasn't bad, but it was a little sweet for me
Pecan syrup, which had a nice flavor, not too sweet, and had just a hint of pecans
Boysenberry syrup, which was just odd to me. Still have trouble thinking about that one.
Those were all tried at an IHOP. The best they serve is their warm maple.
As for store bought, I like Aunt Jemima's Butter Lite

Maple syrup

OR

Heat up frozen blueberries and add about 1/4 cup sugar to every cup of blueberries, cook until juice has reduced somewhat.

If you don't like blueberries, use raspberries.

Any of the berry syrups......real berries, not flavorings. Nothingis better than huckleberry syrup or blackberry syrup.
