i wonder if politicians, period. have more lust for money and profit than they do about improving the condition of the planet they live? they would go to war and dig trough miles of earth and contaminate the local fresh water to get to oil.

Because the Republican Party does not care about issues such as little green men from Mars invading earth. They are more concerned with making sure we have a great economy and that the security of the country is good. The democrats only use the hoax of global warming to get votes from all the suckers who call themselves US citizens. What we need is for everyone who truly believes in this great hoax to get a mental evaluation. Global warming was invented by Al Gore and should be classified as a religion. The US gov't has no right spending billions to help promote someone's religion. Instead of worshipping Earth I suggest you reach out to God however you believe in Him.

I am so depressed by the repeated - "it's just a scam" - posts. They always jump in first - it's like they were being paid!

Yes The issue is politcal - geo and corporate and democratically significant.
Yo to the mr geologist I ain't no Gaia nutter but if you look up from your rock (some of which were once living creatures - oil!) you will see that the earth is alive - unless we are all robots - you don't have to pray to something to respect it. Or do you Sh1t in your kitchen because it ain't alive and so don't matter.
To the people that say you first - W all need to do something - but if the 5% of the world's population producing 25% of the worlds CO2 say "well no point in us reducing until the other 95% of the world starts to do it" then nothing will happen. May as well dump nuclear waste in drinking water because other people do that - How frickin childish.

Of course the republicans sit not only in denial but actively commission reports 1st decrying GW as happening and 2nd now saying that it was GW that caused the CO2 rise. The scientists that produce these reports just happen to work for Exxon et al. You know the pattern - smoking is good for you research via tobaco sponsored programmes and you couldn't get a grant to do open research if you begged the government.

Always always read the manufacture's label and ask who paid for the research.

Until others realize this is NOT a Democrat or Republican world there will be NO solutions to any problems.

Wake-up and STOP playing the blame game. The reality of the Democrat/Republican issues is that it is only a "legalized gang" of like minded individuals that play with the minds of the masses. Really.

Enough with the political party blame game and start putting forth solutions. If you get trapped in this way of thinking (Democrats or better than Republicans or Republicans or better than Democrats) you will NEVER see through the smoke screen of propaganda spewing fourth from Washington, Hollywood and many other sources.

The only purposes of Democrat/Republican propaganda is to stay with the status Quo. That doesn't mean all politicians are "bad". It just means you have to listen & observe BEFORE you make anymore statements like "why havent the republican-base admitted...(blah)...(blah)..."

You might as well be rooting for your favorite sports team because that's the level of thought that went into in this question... WAKE UP before it's too late to save your mind, body and soul.

As far as global warming is concerned, it is a very serious problem; and as the rest of the world craves the "American Dream," global warming will become more and more of a problem. The US makes up approximately 5% of Earth's population...

The development of deserts to grasslands and forest to highways is taking it's toll BUT who are we to deprive others from 2-car garage home with 2.5 kids.

I have a few ideas but I get paid for those opinions so I will have to defer further discussion on this topic...

However, I do suggest you try to phrase your questions a little more "politically correct" in the future.

Good luck on your struggle (or travels) through life.

It's an interesting question. If you look at it, you see that all of the Republicans EXCEPT John McCain and Sam Brownback have in fact taken NO position of most environmental issues, including Global Warming. That's in marked contrast to the Democrats who have all taken various environmental stances. Calling the opposition to efforts to address Global Warming "Republican" or "Conservative" is as dopey as calling environmentalism "Democrat" or "Liberal". We all need to be smarter than that.

Still there are shifts of position within the party of Lincoln that are obvious if you pay attention. The Evangelical Christians as a Group now call for action on Global Warming, and are taking progressively more pro environmental stances. I think that's based in part on something they always acknowledged; we are the stewards of the earth, and what kind of place it is to live is therefor our responsibility. The shift though, is probably just because they finally consulted their Bibles on the subject and found Global Warming to be a better fit to prophecy than Nuclear War, or any of the past possibilities.

I don't personally trust Newt Gingrich's recent conversion to a pro environmental viewpoint. When you look at the spacifics of his proposals, they are as dangerous as anything the anti-environmental types come up with. I think he's a shill. The Democrats seem to like him, which doesn't surprise me.

With the groundwork being laid in the Conservative wing of the Republican Party, I wouldn't be surpriised to see most of their candidates take strong environmental positions and call for action on Global Warming, sometime prior to the election. They just want to keep their distance from the Democrats and don't want it to be too obvious they're dumping George Bush. If you expect them to write out a note and pin it to your shirt explaining what's going on, they won't.

No Virginia, scientists were NOT "screaming" a few decades ago that we were going to have another Ice Age. A couple of guys floated the idea in some pop science and general interest magazines, talk shows and the like. One was even a climatologist. The idea was never accepted by the scientific community, or published in a reputable journal, outside of editorial format. The trouble with it was, although our historic weather patterns should have been bringing us into another ice age, it obviously wasn't. It has been getting hotter, rather than cooler. This statement is a good example of the principle that no matter how many times you repeat an untrue statement it stays just as untrue as the first time you said it.

First, Global Warming is no more a threat to life on this planet than any other Climate Change.

As a matter of fact, LIFE loves the current CO2 levels, and plants couldn't be happier that we're raising them.

Animals, as always, will flourish as the fauna do.

Anyone who tells you that "life" is threatened by Global Warming better present evidence to that effect, and it better show an overall DECREASE in LIFE.

The only ones really threatened are HUMAN Coastal Dwellers who insist on maintaining the current coastline in perpetuity. And we know what their chances are!

If humans ARE the problem, why is wiping out a couple billion of them considered so bad?

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the Bush Administration hired Philip Cooney as the Environmental head of staff.

Prior to being hired he was working for the American Petroleum Institute in charge of their global warming disinformation campaign, since leaving the White House he has joined Exxon Mobil.

Interestingly, not long after the departure of Cooney, the Republicans came out and admitted they were wrong and that climate change is a serious threat.

It would be hard to find a less suitable candidate for the post and with Cooney in the White House it was inevitable that the Administration would play down or deny the effects of climate change. He's an expert in disinformation, unfortunately many people beleived what they were told without questioning it or demanding independent verification.

I am not a republican nor a politician. My problem with the Global Warming people is that their math is bogus. They claim that if all the ice in Greenland were to thaw it would raise sea level by over 200 feet. The amount of ice in a cube the size of the surface area of Greenland to raise the level of the sea one foot would be over 237 miles thick.

If they lied about the math then what else have they lied about?

Edit: I get 3 thumbs down for math. DO IT FOR YOURSELF!

The criticism of Al Gore's house is not entirely fair, read my source. As for the comparison between the Bush ranch and Al Gore's house, keep in mind that Bush lives in the White House. Did you know that Jimmy Carter had solar panels installed in the White House, only to be taken down by Ronald Reagan?

You pretty much said it.

There seem to be several reasons why the (not rich) members of the Republican base still deny global warming, its human causes, or at least the need to take action.

One (no kidding, I'm notd making this up) is that some of them believe that Jesus is soon to return so it doesn't matter if the Earth is ruined--Jesus will remake the world into a paradise.

Personally, I think if Jesus does come back, He will look around at what's left of the beautiful world He gave us to live in--and the first thing he'll say is "WHO made this MESS????"

I'd hate to be a member of the religious right right then! :)

Democrats probably use more oil than republicans, certainly a comparable amount. Being a geologists, I really find the modern pagans worship of Gaea to be ridiculous. Everyone can believe what they want, but as a geologist, I understand the earth is not alive. It is ironic that these neo-pagans consider themselves enlightened.
