I just can't get over how many people who post on this site don't seem to understand how the male and female reproductive systems work. Do you think there is a lack of sex ed in our school systems or are the parents failing?

I guess Ghetto Princess has a point - at least they are asking.

BOTH! Don't get me started. Schools are barely allowed to talk about reproduction and parents are in denial. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

My 3 year old knows the words "penis" and "vagina". I'm floored when my friends can't believe we use those words for "those parts". DUH. I fully plan to talk to her about abstinence AND protection when she's older, because you can't be with them 24 hours a day.

Are you horrified by how little people know about human reproduction ?
Not really --- the thing that "horrifies" Me -- is that, so many people opt to USE the little knowledge that they have -- to bring tens of thousands of children into the world who are either totally unwanted OR are brought to the world because of every other reason in the world besides the RIGHT reasons !!
The information on the "workings" of the plumbing and stematics of this realm are but another subject that youngsters are allowed to "cruise through" whether it is the system OR the parents that are trying to inform them -- the youngsters themselves had rather get their knowledge from the streets (because it is seen by them to be a much "cooler" way of " getting the word up" ) and the system and parents seem to be just fine by that in the way that they allow the youngsters to call the shots in this area !!!

As a 15 year old in high school I am amazed by the lack of knowledge in my school. Some people think you can get pregnant or not get STD's from oral sex. I think because of some schools teaching abstinence is the reason. I think abstinence should be taught as the only 100% way to keep safe but birth control should also be taught. I think it needs to be more avaliable to teenagers too. When 3 12 year old girls at my school got pregnant, they decided to evaluate the sex ed program and start it earlier. I am also amazed about the lack of knowladge of some parents on here. I have taken many child development classes and work at a daycare and it just amazes me what some parents ask. Im glad their atleast asking though. =)

Yes, I think the sex ed is failing. Also I think in general sex ed and even some parents are outdated. Shame makes people have to ask in the anonimity of the Internet, which isnt the most trustful place to get real answers.
I remember in school the only sex ed I had was a half hour movie of puberty-marriage-and the ONLY way that people supposedly have babies. I think talking about sex is something normal, and it shouldnt be approached as a dirty thing. If young people will have sex anyway, its better that theyre well informed by sexologists or physicians, etc, about contraception and safe sex for instance.
And also include in the sex ed ways of NOT having sex at young ages. I think many people do it in order to be accepted, not because they really want to or are mature/informed enough to have a responsible relationship.

I agree! I think people are not educated enough about the BASICS of human reproduction. Now, I understand there are going to be some things you just don't know, but seriously... we're talking BASICS! Sometimes reading what people write just kills me. For instance, the whole "I've never had sex and I missed my period - am I pregnant?" - it's like, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! There is clearly a lack of education, and I'd say the lack is from the parents AND the school systems.

I think both your suggestions are correct. Too many parents expect the school to teach their kids everything (and I do mean everything .. my sister teaches kindergarten and has kids who can't wipe their own bottoms). On the other hand, so many parents have whined and cried about banning books (Catcher in the Rye, anyone?) that have any hint of sexual content, so they are terrified to teach sex ed. It's a sad, sad thing.

I told my kids about sex ed. I don't care to be a grandma at 35, and I don't want them exposed to STDs. And if I tell them, I know they get the right info and don't have to worry that the school is teaching too little on the subject.

I live in North Dakota, and where i went to school everyone knew the "basics" at an early age. If you still dont know by sophmore year we had to take a life skills class where we had an awesome teacher who went very in depth into pregnancy (even had to watch a birth video), STD's and things like that. I think half the people that post questions asking stuff like that are just trolls trying to enrage people so they post rude answers and then they report them and get them booted because they have nothing better to do.

I think some people are just not thinking clearly or they are remembering their own reproductive issues. I never talked to my parents about sex, like that. I learned the important stuff in health class.

Well those who believe in the stork seem to want to leave it up to nature.

Those who believe in science, teach it right.

The system and parents are both failing. But that's true with everything today. Our kids are getting dumber while the rest of the world's kids are getting smarter.

It's a shame. We can thank George Bush for our abstinence only sex education. I think our government and parents are failing our children. We are the ones that need to inform them and create awareness about human reproduction, birth control, AIDS/HIV, and STD's. You can tell kids/teens to refrain from sexual behavior and implement an abstinence only program....but they're still going to do it. Why not educate them now before they contract an STD or become teen parents? It's the only way!
