Ephesians 4:29 (Amplified Bible)

29Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God's favor) to those who hear it.

God hears the words you say when you gossip. He knows the harm you have done. One day God will ask, "Why did you say that?" God says in Matthew 12:36, "But I tell you that men will have to give an account . . . for every careless word they have spoken." Remember that, and you will not gossip.

My theology teacher (who was a Priest) once told our class that ruining someones reputation is just as bad as murder. Because some people will spend their entire life building up an honorable respectable reputation, and one person can destroy that.
He said that doing that is as sinful as killing someone, because you are basically killing their image and reputation.
I felt after he said that, I really realized the effects of gossiping and talking bad about people.

I think God has the right idea with this whole gossiping thing. Nobody likes a gossip, first off. Most gossip is mean in nature and speculative. If you are talking about someone and have to start with the words " I heard that....", then you are probably gossiping. It is truly worthless talk, like 1890 minutes out of your 2000 cellphone minutes are.

Heard a message on that very thing last night. Talking about the whole amour of God. Do you ever throw it down and respond in the flesh, or do you use it wisely and prayerfully keep your mouth closed and pray? Good subject. When the fiery darts of the enemy are coming at you it is hard to remember we are not fighting against flesh and blood, we sometimes too easily respond with the same force.

Judgment day is a sobering thought.

Thank you!
Man it is hard at times to not fall into that trap. Sometimes I will be talking, and bring up somebody in the converstation but not thinking it is negative- when in fact it is speaking about their personal life, which is also gossip! Not talking bad but also just speaking about someones personal life can be gossip! ( if what you are speaking of is something they have done wrong or whatever) You know what I mean...so I have easily fallen into that trap and the minute I do, I realize "AHHH!!" and then I make myself stop. Forgive us Lord when we become entangled in this sin, and please continually set on our hearts the reminder of your precious word when we are talking with others.
Thank you for sharing this! God Bless You!

Well are you a Christian? If not, then they are. Just because they are praying for you doesn't mean they know everything going on in your life, that just means God has put it on their hearts that you have been going through rough times and that you need prayer. If they're praying for you then thats a GOOD thing. A GREAT thing actually. So why are you not being thankful for what those people are doing for YOU?

Our tongue possesses the power Of life & death. We need to be quick to listen and slow to speak. However, when we're standing Idly by listening to somebody trash another person's rep...we need to be carefull with the measure we use In listening,as It will be measured back to us. Gossip Is ...spiritual murder of that person's rep. Isn't satan called the accuser of the brethern...Leave that job to him, he doesn't need our help. Every word you speak...take HEED..And think ??? Does this Bring life or death to this person. Does It uplift this person ?? Then Why say anything. We need to take extra caution when "Sharing" things. First of all If God has revealed something to you about that person ...then you have been called to pray or stand In the gap...Not To "Share"...That's gossiping. This Is a dangerous thing. You're pulling that person's sin out from under the blood of Jesus to expose It. That's dangerous...Because you don't know If that person has repented of that sin. All things done In secret will be brought into the light....

Yes, I do realize this.
For me as a Christian, this is a good reminder.

This is, however, a public forum. I wonder if this posting might be read as judgmental by those who don't believe in Him.

When you say, "God hears the words YOU say when YOU gossip. He knows the harm YOU have done...", it sounds terribly smug. Don't you ever make a mistake? I know I do.

How is your posting helpful? I'm afraid it might turn people away from finding the love of God.

Just look at the responses. Does it seem that you've changed anyone's heart?

Please be careful.
