i believe we currently have troops in about 60 different countries.
since WWII, whenever the usa goes to war - our troops stay.
when we 'lost' vietnam (not really lost at all - vietnam was destroyed and removed as any kind of world player for 3+ decades) the only thing that it really meant was that our troops had to come home when it was over...

All of them. Many of them are just doing covert and intelligence gathering missions which don't require a visa, if you know what I mean. Some countries have more of our troops than others, and some don't know about our presence. The danger to our troops varies considerably also, and some people may not be interested in the countries where our presence is mutually desired, accepted, and "safe." But if "all countries" was not the answer that you were looking for then it would depend entirely on what you want to count as "troop" presence.
I do agree though that our forces are far too frequently used for international politics, instead of training for rapid response to direct threats. We waste much valuable resources abroad, when we could be wasting them at home instead .. but without the body bags and drapped flags, and international anger. Where's the tactical nuke button when you need it?
edit: Since no one has mentioned some of the big ones, I'll be the first then: Iraq, UAE, Korea, Afghanistan, and Japan are some of our largest overseas deployments at the present moment. We brought most of our troops home from Europe only to re-deploy them to Iraq.

In addition to these answers--simply put every country that has an Embassy, and in respect a consulate. At least one military member often more are assigned to Embassy positions in the Military Attache office, Military Postal Clerks in the Mail Room, Construction servicemen and women who repair internal and maintain internal secruity systems, Marines in Marine Guard positions, and adivsors in Joint US Military Assistance Groups. Even countries that only have a consulate general like guadalcanal have US military personnel responsible for this consulate, and for the nation overall in a number of ways.

Approximately thirty three countries worldwide and several territories such as Guam and Okinawa. The bases are scattered in Europe, South America, and the Pacific as well as the ME. This of course excludes the US. The largest bases we have our based in the US, Korea, Japan, Germany and Guam, as well as a large training base in Kuwait. Hope it helps.

Tricky question. It depends on what purpose you mean. If you include Marine embassy guards, etc., probably about 130 countries.
