to be honest with you.
i have been building systems for more than 15 years now.
i used to swear on norton however over the past few years i have found that avanquest system suite professional works best. it has a boat load of useful tools to fix your computer.
it has spyware spam ware virus scanner, all kinds of stuff to keep your pc running.
in fact i love it so much that i wont build a system without it.
its only about 40 bucks but its easy to use and works great.
plus it also comes with bonus software for catching hackers called ghost surf.
try it.
please by all means stay away from macafee though

You can get a free scan ONLY from Spyware Doctor. It will scan and let you know if you have spyware, but it won't clean it because you have to buy it first.
Go to www.pctools.com and do your scan.

I think that if you are going to install a scanner you might as well install a cleaner. most of them tell you the problems before they offer to fix them. You would have to install software either way

I scan my computer with spybot all the time but it only finds tracking cookies that i could care less about. But I'm careful not to install things from non-trusted sources

Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware SE are both free, and they will perform both scanning and removal. If all you want to do is scan, they will let you do that.
