There have been many civil wars. The earliest ones I know of were Roman civil wars - and I believe that's where the name comes from.

England has had three - but the one called "The Civil War" by the Brits, or "The English Civil War" by others, was the last - in the 1640s - Parliament under Oliver Cromwell beat the forces of King Charles I.

In the 20th century major civil wars were fought in Russia (1917-19), Spain (1930s), China (late 1940s), Korea (50-53), Vietnam (60s & 70s) and Jugoslavia (90s). All o0f these except the last had communists on one side. The communists won in Russia, China & Vietnam, lost in Spain - Korea was a draw.

There are several civil wars underway right now in Africa.

Americans refer to their civil war, fought in the 1860s over the exercise of the constitutional right of states to secede from the union, as "the civil war" - as though it were the only one, although they're not alone in this (see English Civil War above), but most Brits seem to know about some of the others at least!

Was the civil war in Iraq what?

No such thing; the supposedly "Civil" war in Iraq was spurred by Insurgent groups that are from outside of the country and they came in and started killing civilians left and right in order to put the two religious groups in Iraq (Shia/Sunni) against each other in order to get the US and the Coalition in the middle of it and from within this Chaos, they could raise supreme and take over the country.

The insurgency, specifically Al-Qaeda in Iraq, does not care for the civilians they kill, that's why they have no problem in driving a car loaded with explosives (VBIED) into a crowded market or blow up a Mosque (like they did in Samarra) and kill scores of unarmed civilians; that's the reason you are starting to see former insurgent groups banding together with the US military and the Iraqi Government or Al-Maliki in order to destroy Al-Qaeda in Iraq and force the group out of the country.

Aside of wherever you believe that the War in Iraq is justified or not, you have to at least understand that insurgent groups fighting against our forces do not care for stability in Iraq (have you seen any insurgent group building schools or rebuilding the power grids?), but they would prefer chaos to remain, so they can then force themselves into power and control Iraq's oil infrastructure to finance their terrorist operations in other parts of the world.
