My brother is a college freshman who started a few days ago. I'd really like to send him some things that he would appreciate in a care package. He has 2 roommates, so he's living in close quarters. I don't want to send any packaged food, although I may bake something for him. What else can I send him and do you have any packaging tips?

Maybe you can buy a big laundy basket and fill it with all kind of things he could use and wrap it in plastic. This way after he takes all the stuff out he can use the laundry basket. You could fill it with maybe some school supplies, laundry detergent, hangers, any other things you can think of he mind need and then throw in a gift card to a grocery store and a couple different gift cards to resturants or fast food places and maybe a gas card, depending how much you want to spend. If he already has a laundry basket then just some kind of big grab bag with random things in it including something you've baked for him.

Food is always welcome.
I would also suggest small things that come in handy... that gummy stuff you hang posters with, scotch tape, staples, a ream of typing paper. Guys have a tough time budgeting for these type things.
How about a gift card to a local grocery store? That is easier than shipping snacks.
What are the rules for the dorm?
If they are allowed to have a hot-plate (or can at least hide one), they can also have some canned foods like Ravioli-Os, Spaghetti-Os, and assorted stuff like that. Believe me, cream-style corn is a feast when the cafeterias close.

Send him some college supplies, like pens, pencils, paper, posters for his walls, if you do want to send him some food stuff, send him stuff like oreo's, koolaid single packets, ramen noodle soup and other stuff that can be cooked in a microwave. You could also send him hygene products. Most guys don't like to have to buy that stuff so having someone get it for him. He would probably really appreciate it. Anyway good luck finding something.

Maybe some framed family photo's etc... Its the personal things that will make an impact.
Use bubble wrap before you wrap them up in paper or a box,it will stop fragile things being damaged.
