This is a totally off the wall guess, since it is such a long shot, but....seeing a yellow or green hue, especially after having your eyes closed for a while, is a classic indication of a condition called digitalis toxicity. Digitalis is an old drug, used for heart problems, and used with much less frequency now with the development of newer drugs. If your mom has heart problems, she might possibly take digitalis, and the green color she sees could mean she needs to have her blood levels checked and her dosage adjusted.

Are there other problems, blurriness, burning, itching, watering, floaters. She could have retinal detachment, or something seroius. Or is could just be that she has dry eyes and until she wakes and blinks a little to clear the haze over her eyes, she has a greenish haze.

ask an ophthalmologist , it may be cattaracts developing, which are spots in your eyes where its a green color that you cant see through, if she wants it to go away and she does have cattaracts, there may be certain medical drugs she's on, and they may have severe effects if she has cattaract surgery, so ask the doctor about this.
