they are small dogs that arent very active. i was told all the protein in evo would make them fat but i didnt notice any weight gain when i was feeding it to them. they could never eat a complete serving though

IMO, it is as good if not better after looking at ingredients. Evo doesn't contain grains BUT it also has an inferior amount of Linoleic Acid in the formula. It lists 1.63 percent. That's lacking.
For optimum skin and coat, a dog food needs at least
2 percent Linoleic Acid. Canidae All Life Stages lists ingredients and Linoleic Acid is 3.70 percent. That's excellent.
Canidae lists protein content as 24 percent which is also excellent unless you have a dog that needs a low protein diet. I have one with that requirement.
As someone else said, sometimes there are reasons any given dog food might not be appropriate for an individual dog according to their needs or specific allergies, or conditions. Some dogs need low protein food.
Some don't tolerate certain types of meat.
If your dog likes the Canidae better than the Evo, then seems to me a better choice. Sounds like you have already changed them over to this food.
To avoid weight gain, be picky about the quality and content of any treats, extras you give them besides their meal. Also, do things with them that will increase their activity, like walking longer, more often.
If your VET said the dogs need a LOW PROTEIN DIET, then that would be a consideration against Canidae.

I fed Canidae but 2 of my dogs never adjusted to it -- they have very sensitive digestive systems. I have since found rawfeeding (whole prey model diet) and will never look back. I don't like any kibble. Period. Why not look into it? It's really easy once you get the hang of it, it'll be CHEAPER than Canidae, and it's the best thing you could do for your dog health-wise. That being said, IF I fed kibble and IF I didn't have 2 dogs with very sensitive stomachs, I would probably feed Canidae ALS (Those are 2 very big "ifs" though). I believe Canidae is as high quality as any other grain-ridden kibble. Canidae also has a grain free formula which is just as good as all other premium dehydrated doom nuggets.

Before I went grain-free I was feeding Canidae to my girl and I was pleased with the food itself, just not the results I was getting with it in my dog. Unfortunately, that happens sometimes. You can have a really great high-end food that doesn't agree with your dog or a picky dog that for some reason doesn't like the food. As far as eating a "complete serving" it depends on what is a complete serving. If I fed my dog according to what she "should" be eating according to packages and vet recommendations, my dog would rival the Goodyear Blimp. The only time I would be concerned about a dog not eating is if it goes for several days, is unusual and is accompanied by other symptoms. Unless they were being grossly overfed, I've not heard of someone feeding a high protein diet and their dog getting fat. My dog actually lost the last 4lbs I'd been trying to get off of her when we went high protein, grain free.

Canidae is good, but Evo is better.

If they weren't eating it all, it might have been too much for them. The recommendations on the bags are just that... recommendations. All dogs are different, and yours might not need as much as the average dog that size if they aren't really active.

Evo has several different varieties, so you might want to makw sure to try the red meat, the chicken and even the low fat. I also am a firm believer in not catering to the dog... Put the food down, give them 15 min... if they don't eat it, pick it up. Give it to them again at the next feeding time. A healthy dog will not starve itself.

Dogs who were previously fed something else that had LOTS of carbs like grains become addicted to grains. This can make them act like they aren't interested in their new "grain free" food. Really, they are suffering from carb withdrawl, and are hoping you will bring back all the carbs. Just like people who go on Atkins diets.

I personally am also a believer in rotating the foods and adding a little bit of the wet food also. I think getting the dogs into a rotation helps keep them from getting allergies to any particular meat/food.

Good luck.

Canidae is an excellent dog food.. Our dogs just love it and do very well on it.. I don't like to feed them a high protein level.. Protein levels that are too high cause hot spots, cause them to be rammy and hyper.. People like the Evo, but I haven't really seen many Doberman people saying that they feed it.. There are several good dog foods, some are better for some breeds, others are better for others.

Canidae is a great choice. My dog loves it. I been feeding Canidae for 2 years now and had no problems with it and haven't even had to see the vet other than for his shots. Most of all his stools are so small and dry.

Canidae is one of the best. There is no need to worry. Canidae has a taste that dogs love. I feed it to my dogs all the time. Your dogs will love it too. If it is healthy for the dog, keep it, fortunatly, Canidae is one of the best.

When looking at any dog food this is a very important thing to look for:

CANIDAE® Lamb Meal and Rice Formula is formulated to meet the nutritional standards established by the AAFCO Dog Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.

I've got all my golden's on Canidae. Even my new 11 week old pup. I love the way it makes them look and they love it too.

I've had not hot spots this summer and not 1 ear infection either.
Yes I'd recomend it very highly!

I would check any recall list. Then read the list of ingredients on the canidae bag. If you are satisfied with the main ingredients (real meat, vegetables, vitamins, minerals, etc.) then try it out.
