In the event of something traumatic, like an auto accident, definitely yes. It is called dissociative amnesia. Your brain is protecting you from a lot of mental anguish.
Dissociative amnesia also occurs in sociopathic personalitites, who can forget anything they want to forget.
An alcoholic blackout or memory loss from anesthesia does not constitute dissociative amnesia, since these are chemically induced.
And you do not want me even to get started on multiple personality disorders.
