I need more info for a better answer, which verse were they talking about?
Herod did have all male children age 2 years and younger put to death after the magi failed to return to him.

Nobody really knows anything about those times because it is all hearsay - the writers wrote what they heard about, not what they actually witnessed first hand. Taking that into account, it only makes sense to take everything written in the bible lightly.
