you have got the right idea of what God means to people in the modern world, the problem is, is that God comes with baggage, the Church, and they are using peoples insecurities to gain power, and subjugate the conscience of the believer, for greed. would a God let this happen, in his name?

A belief in God as A security blanket, is a good way of describing faith, it is a shame that the rational and logical mind can not subscribe to this concept.

I don't think that religion is like that. I used to think that, but then I wondered, is 35% percent of the world really THAT demented, and even more somewhat demented? No. Religion is really just science. It's going back to what created the universe. It's the smart people questioning the existence. But then, the small amount of retards got jealous and started their own little cult. "Christianity" they called it. They started planting it every, using fear as their largest weapon. At first, their were doubts. But then as their numbers grew, people thought, "If there are so many, it must be right!" Coupled with that and the fear tactic, they were unstoppable. These people were not dumb. In fact, they were smart! But they were paralyzed by fear. They trained their Children this way. They said that God would send them to eternal torture if they did not follow the household rules. Then came the Bible schools. They were literally training kids to think like them, or else! They were taught to hate, and shove their religion down other peoples throats. The real religion behind it became so obscured that I started developing my own theories. I did not want to be part of something that resembled something so grotesque, no matter if the real religion behind it was true!

i will go for the adult security blanket option.
Yep. Funny thing is we don't need it and we can do better without it but just with any major change people are freaked out by the idea of a world without religion.
"what will people do?" "will the world collapse in anarchy?"
"will decent people turn into rapists and murderers and will rapist and murderers invent new crimes to outdo themselves?"
We don't realize that we are basically good people with a great nature (we don't realize this because religion says we should be wary and afraid of the human nature). But like everyone who has turned their back on this security blanket leaving the fear, guilt and its inherent lack of personal responsibility behind, i know that not only have i not become an ax murderer and rapist but i have become a better person and a more useful asset to the human race as an atheist than i was as a christian

Bear in mind your trying to work out the nature of the universe with a lump of chemical electrical biomass thats a few decades old, and has only seen a tiny portion of one tiny planet in the backwater of the solar system- anything we come up with is most likely halfarsed and wrong - when it comes down to it we all latch on to the explanation most pleasing to us to stop ourselves going nuts- whether it be an all knowing, all powerful god that looks after anything, or the idea of a universe that can be quantified, understood and manipulated if only you look at it hard enough - both are fairly daft when you think about it...
Sorry Shannon- The Bible is not the oldest book- the Illiad beats it by centuries- maybe we should all start praying to Zeus again...

Personally I know that God exists because I went to a retreat and that was when the Lord opened up my eyes. I felt a powerful touch from the Lord and I still do.
If God never existed, who made us?Who made the animals? Who made the rainbows? Where does love come from? It is hard to imagine a world that had no love, because God is love. If there was no God there would be no love. Who put the stars in the sky? Who keeps the sea from going over it's limit? Who prevents the sun from burning us alive? Who changes the day to night?
I do not doubt that there is a God, not only because I feel his touch everyday, but look at all he has created. It is also in the bible.
He loves you too.

Good analogy! Totally agree, he's just a security blanket. Karl Mark described religion as an opiate of the people - quite right.

From my own personal experience, I can tell you this: Before I gave my life to Jesus Christ, I wasn't sure if He existed. But after I gave my life to Him, He showed Himself to me in a variety of ways. If you're living a real Christian life, God will move in your life in ways that are unexplainable.

Faith is the currency of heaven: God is not pleased without faith. So if you cannot first come to God in faith, then you will never know if He is real, and you will be doomed because you neglected the free salvation offered by Jesus for your sins.

In short, if you have faith and you come to God and ask Him to show Himself to you in some way, I believe He will.

More like an imaginary friend for grown ups. Some people just don't want to grow up and look within for the answers.
