The wheel was probably the best invention before sliced bread.

Sure any idiot can slice a piece of bread, but can you get each slice perfectly the same so that the kids don't fight over who got the bigger piece?

store bought shoes -seriously
The great thing about machine sliced bread was that you could get more sandwiches from one loaf or maybe more slices of toast.
If you think that any idiot can cut a piece of bread , get a scale and do a yield test .
Go to a bakery and buy one loaf of sliced and one loaf of unsliced bread .
Using a bread knife see if you can get 16 perfectly uniform slices out of a loaf . It looks easy to do but it's not .

At one time in our society, bread was sold unsliced, or women baked their own loaves of bread. When sliced bread became manufactured, it was considered at that time, a great convenience, especially when making sandwiches. In our time, sliced bread is taken for granted, and not a big deal, but back a couple generations, it was a time saver.
