There are 4 types of kidney stones. One is genetic, so we'll leave those out. The others are calcium (most common), struvite and uric acid. Or something like that....I'm getting foggy on the details now.
Outside of drinking plenty of liquids (water is best) and eating a healthy diet and getting exercise, there's not much you can do to prevent them.
That's because the three types are believed to be caused by different things, so doing something to prevent uric acid stones won't stop you from getting calcium stones.
Cranberry may help with struvite stones, since it's found to help prevent infections.
Drinking/eating tons of dairy is now believed to be helpful in preventing calcium stones, whereas taking calcium supplements may result in them.
Bottom line - be healthy. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water, although cranberry juice and/or lemonade are good as well. Get regular exercise, eat healthy without going to extremes in any one area, and hope for the best.
Also know that men are more likely to form stones, and for whatever reason, August seems to be the peak season for them. Which is funny because that's when I got mine!
EDIT: I didn't come across grapefruit juice in my research, but I would assume it was recommended because it adds citric acid. And/or affects the ph balance of your urine. If you like the stuff, by all means drink it. But if you're like me and find that it tastes like absolute ****, don't bother. Lemonade would work as well.

mmm, i've never heard that grapefruit juice help reduce the risk of kidney-stones. I know that it does help with decreasing blood pressure.
Kidney stone is composed with different. It can be made of calcium or salt crystals. Hence, if you drink/eat a lot of food with salt or calcium, drink eight glasses of 8 oz water daily to dilute and help your kidney pass out tiny stones before they get big.
Cranberry juice, and prune juice help make your urine more acidic, hence not only do they prevent urinary tract infection but also create an unsuitable environment for kidney stone formation.

Drink a lot of lemonade !!! My Urologist found crystals forming in my urine and recommended that I drink a lot of lemonade because it has the type of citric acid which dissolves the crystals which forms kidney stones . I followed his instructions and was re -tested 2 mos later and the crystals were gone !!!!! PS ...... Cranberry juice is good for the prevention and the flushing - out of bacterial infections not crystals which form the kidney stones of which you ask .

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
