We should cherish others, not self cherish. Nor cherish only are family and friends. If we are self cherishing or grasping does that mean we are unaware of our own faults, or does it mean that we are blind to see the positive qualities of all others?

Does strong attachment encourage self cherishing or is strong attachment self cherishing in itself?

Self cherishing means that we are deluded about the true nature of existence. It means we believe that we inherently exist, independently of causes, conditions and phenomena. Because we think this way we grasp at all kinds of concepts that aren't real or don't matter.

We think we own things like land, air and water when, in fact, we're only using them while we are here. We exaggerate our importance in any situation because we think we are the center of our own little existence universe when in fact we are continuously changing and marching inexorably toward leaving this borrowed body behind, and this ego causes us to grasp at our own possessions, feelings, thoughts and emotions and that grasping prevents us from what truly matters, which is compassionate loving-kindness toward all living beings.

Self-cherishing causes us to have a wrong view of the world, and with wrong view it is difficult to impossible to have right speech, right action, right wisdom.

i think this is a question for women
a little deep for me .

Are we not told that we must first love ourselves before we can love others

Personally i always thought love others ,but when there is no one around love thyself.

mmmmmmm

or does cherish have another meaning here ???
I don`t want to go blind.

Of course the tribal
attitude should be to look after the community .

But the family and loved ones first.
That is the instincts we were born with
kind of hard to alter Human Nature.

And in close relation ship with others ,if it is an honest relationship ,ones loved ones and friends tend to point out ones faults quick enough.

damn them
or is it thanks
