A high school friend of mine was appointed to the Coast Guard Academy. His father was a retired Coast Guard Officer and hinted that he could have helped me if I were inclined to go there (I was not). I would recommend looking up a local military officer, either active duty or retired, that has completed a service academy and ask for advice. I would guess that it is very competetive academically, however, character and leadership skills will also be a key to getting appointed and successful completion. As for my friend that did go to the Coast Guard Academy, he dropped out after a year because it was more demanding than he bargained for. I don't know the details, so I can't be any more specific than that.

I'm not sure what the actual requirements are but the average high school gpa of selected applicants is 3.9. So yeah, you've gotta be pretty smart, they want the best of the best, not a bunch of kids who coasted through high school and want a free ride.

You have to be smart, disciplined, and determined. I also believe that you have to be appointed by your senator or congressman to get in.
Which academy are you trying to enter? West Point, Annapolis, Etc?
Each school should have a list of requirements for entry that is posted for potential cadets to look over...as well as rules and regs, etc.

I couldn't find info on GPA, but for SAT I found this: "The average score for students in the Class of 2010 was 1277." (That's for West Point.)
