President Felipe Calderon blasted U.S. immigration policies on Sunday and promised to fight harder to protect the rights of Mexicans in the U.S., saying “Mexico does not end at its borders.”

The criticism earned Calderon a standing ovation during his first state-of-the nation address.

“We strongly protest the unilateral measures taken by the U.S. Congress and government that have only persecuted and exacerbated the mistreatment of Mexican undocumented workers,” he said. “The insensitivity toward those who support the U.S. economy and society has only served as an impetus to reinforce the battle … for their rights.”

He also reached out to the millions of Mexicans living in the United States, many illegally, saying: “Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico.”

Interesting, isn’t it? Calderon can’t even make that boast good in his own country! Millions of Mexican citizens live in areas not controlled by the Mexican government but by vicious, murdering drug gangs. His control over his own capitol is also in question since the speech where he uttered those inflammatory words was not delivered at the Mexican Capitol building, the San Lazaro, where tradition dictates it be given, but rather at the National Palace (Palacio Nacional). This is due to the opposition’s blocking him from making the speech at the capitol, claiming Calderon rigged the election that brought him to power.

Of course, he’s counting on the fact that his fighting words will create a backlash from illegal immigrant opponents which will gain sympathy and support for the lawbreakers from legal Mexicans and naturalized citizens here in America. This will only serve to put more pressure on the Democrats and President Bush to pass an amnesty bill sooner rather than later.

No doubt, many will overreact to Calderon’s carefully calculated insult to American sovereignty and thus play into his hands. But actually, this is truly pathetic from the Mexican President. He is reduced to political tricks in order to get the American government to acquiesce to immigration reform.
He can brag as much as he wishes about Mexico claiming sovereignty over anywhere in the US that an illegal immigrant is breaking the law. But in the end, his rhetoric is as empty as his head if he thinks that anyone actually believes such nonsense.
If Mexicans living in America are part of Mexico then let Mexico’s national healthcare system pay their medical bills and mortgage defaults and let Mexico incarcerate the rapists, drug dealers, and other felons living north of the nonexistent border.

Oh yeah, and those anchor babies aren’t Americans after all, are they???

Why not take advantage of the archaic laws that were made for the melting pot of Eilis island? I understand that mexico is a defeated corrupt country.

so who cares if the mexican president dances naked on top of a prison, playing a ukulele, saying "i'm going to bit your nipples off, hilary clinton!" while teaching an ostrich how to use a toilet ? we know that he's justa figure head.

that's why they are coming over. the illegal people feel empowered because they are becoming "americanized" they are finding a new reason to have pride-even if it's wrong,

because in their country, they couldn't express themselves like they can here, or have the opportunity to (for great majority) to work for nothing that's taxed, and drive our educational system to a grinding slothness that will take years to make better. and all of the other stinking problems. they are hurting themselves in the long run though....just a little analyzation will tell you that.

those babies are innocent- and have no idea why or for what reason they were brought into this world- so lets show them the right way of doing thing, and get past all this intercontental crap -and work on space travel, and colonizing new planets- and a better fuel sources- instead of dead plants and animals. instead of focusing on religion. or whatever your personal hang up is... (wow way off the deep end,eh?)

In fact you are wrong. Was the President Calderon who went to the USA last week. He spent 2 days in Washington DC, where he meet President elect Obama in the Mexican Institute for Culture, and visited President Bush at the White House. They talked about trade, regional safety, drug war and economy.

The only question I can find in your opinion piece is about the "anchor babies" (which is an ugly term, by the way). If an American goes to another country--say, England?--and has a child, I'm pretty sure that child can have dual citizenship. So the child needn't stop being American in order to be British. It's not either/or.

By the same logic, Calderon's "where there's a Mexican, there is Mexico" doesn't invalidate the Americanism of someone who was previously Mexican. It allows for someone to be both.

I understand that plenty of Americans HATE this idea, but keep in mind that it works for us in other countries, too.

Yes. And the U.S. people didn't take La Raza seriously? We better wake up before California, New Mexico and Arizona get annexed to Mexico.

I just hope Bush doesn't cave in to the pressure. No one should tell us how to run our country.
