It depends on your personality and nature, where you live and what you are capable of doing.

Fast food, supermarket jobs might suck the big one, but they are actually a good place to start. There are lots of stories of people jumping up to the top in many areas (like the high-school drops outs who helped developed Halo, one of the most popular computer game series in history), but that is not always the case.

If you are business orientated, and what to be outdoors, you can mow lawns or even be a builder's labourer.

You can think of other business options. 2 teenage girls in Australia went to visit their grandmother's grave and noticed that many of the graves were untended, and also realised that many people are too busy or often too old to look after a loved ones grave. So they started a service, tending to graves at the local cemetry.

You can also think in terms of career options. For example, working in a shop gives you sales experience, which is a must for a business career.

One way is to go to companies and just ask to work for a few weeks for free, so that you can learn something about the business.

Sports centres often employ young people for all sorts of things, while a friend at school worked on tourist boats (and spend most of the day staring at hot women wearing bikinis).

Often the first job is less important than your second job. With a bit of experience and a good reference you can then get a better part-time job.

My first job as a teenager after babysitting was sacking groceries. It worked out because they hired teenagers under 18 and were flexible while I was in school, and you could do it all year round, unlike lifeguarding. I later did work in a restaurant and a fast food job-and I promise, sacking the groceries was better. Then when you are old enough you are easily moved to cashier.

my first job was at a dry-cleaners, I started there when I was only 14, and depending on the state, they might hire you.

Ask to be a "marker" its where you just inspect the clothes for spots and put tape on the spots, empty out anything in the pockets and staple a little tag on it. If you can sort laundry, you can be a marker.

Get an ice shack - flavored ice sales. Work 3 months a year while not at school, and make a year's worth of dough.
