Until you become an American citizen, you remain a citizen of your original country and the only passport you would be eligible for is a passport from that country. Now, if you arrived in the US as a refugee and can't get a passport from that country, you could apply for a refugee travel document that would be issued by the US, but it is not a US passport and does not recognize you as a US citizen.

An American passport is issued only to citizens of the U.S.A. If you are here on a green card you need to maintain the passport from your native country since you are still considered a citizen of that country.
