You pretty much answered your own question. Self medicating+ depression= anxiety and a million other problems now that you are not depressed you sound like you may be sleeping better. Have you tried not drinking at all? I suggest you give it a try. If it is too hard please seek medical help as you may still be self medicating.

Easy! don't drink or use drugs.
Neither of these helps with depression or coping with problems.
How many problems have you solved by the time you reached the bottom of the bottle?
If you need to relax, turn off the TV early and go out for a walk.
A clear head makes for an easy sleep.

Everything must change
Nothing stays the same
The only thing in life
One can be sure of
Is rain comes from the clouds
The sun lights up the sky
Hummingbirds fly.
-- Carly Simon (If I recall correctly)

Sweetie,
you may not be depressed right now, but you will be.. Alcohol is a depressant. It's also very easy to get addicted to. Self medicating is very dangerouse. I encourage you to see a doctor about your depression. If you dont you may find yourself addicted to alcohol, and thats another ball game and you will end up loosing, and its no fun, trust me I know.
Good luck

Could be you are getting old. Just a couple of years ago, I could hold my own with the best of them, now three bottles of beer, and I'm snoring like a baby.
