I really hate the term "Anchor Baby" because I'm old enough to remember the stigma of" Illegitimate " or Another term "Bas*ard" child. I was a bas*ard child and it was living H*ll in my life. Is it fair to put the CHILD thru that stigma? And I really don't care what you think of the parents and who's to blame. These are children just like I was who had no say in their births. Can't we just say "the undocumented's child"? I'm sorry but I just can't be cruel mentally or physically to a child and rest easy at night.

But that's just my point...I wasn't considered "legal" either back in the day.And believe me even the other kids because of hearing their parents talk made me feel like a freak.

Dorothy, that term started with them being referred to as the anchor in the chain of government benefits. If I were to walk up to a child of illegals and call him/her an anchor baby to it's face..which I would NEVER do...then I would be being cruel to a child. I am never cruel to children. I don't think it is an inappropriate reference and has been twisted from it's initial use when it was becoming a serious problem that some women purposely had their children on U.S. soil for....what? An anchor in the chain of government benefits. Go tell the pregnant women to quit doing it and until then...I'll call it what it is. I'm sorry that there is obviously some kind of personal association with this but being illegimate only means you were born out of wedlock...I don't think you should have been insulted for that.

Uh oh, it's starting to reek of popcorn and fish in here...lol. Dorothy, I meant no offense at all toward you or anyone else. I just read thru your answers and mine sounded rude when I re read it.

Tin Man...Lol...are they ever gonna get off of your back?

EDIT: WHAT in the world is that about? Very odd....

Dorothy, dear, I am heartless. While we frequently skip down the yellow brick road in unison, this time I have to take a different path.

Political correctness aside, I don't think "the undocumented's child" is any better than "anchor baby". The undocumented's child begins with the criminal first, the innocent child second. At least "anchor baby" starts with the most important person-- the child.

Meet ya later at the Cowardly Lion's Den.

Lookin' forward to the pie, dear.

i don't feel the term is meant to be derogatory to the child but is meant to clarify the parents who place the child in this position. it is meant for the child to provide a pathway to citizenship but some do not realize that they must be 18 to petition to sponsor citizenship for their parents. thus the term anchor baby as the parents hope to anchor themselves to the child.

also, this amendment was meant to declare citizenship for slaves and their children but has provided a 'loophole' in the law for illegals who come with the express purpose to have their child born here in the USA.

i do feel badly for the child but not the parents who are the ones who place this burden on their child and if deported make this child a ward of the state or some relative.

i agree that this 'loophole' should be closed to those who would misuse it for their own purposes. IMO

I understand how that must have hurt you. Unfortunately, situations have to have terms to describe them and "anchor baby" is one of those terms, just as "illegitimate" describes, even today, a child born out of wedlock. That is actually the polite word, as you know. I don't think it reflects on the child at all...but children ARE sensitive. Adults should be careful what they say around their own children so some terms aren't repeated in front of other children -- not because they are offensive on their own...but because no one wants to hurt the sensitive feelings of a child.

(You don't sound heartless at all.)

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, walks like a duck.....
then it's a duck. An anchor baby is an anchor baby. I don't blame the kid, but I don't want it here either. They need to all be sent back with their parents. When the Constitution was drafted, they had no idea we would have an illegal immigration problem, if the drafters were alive today I'm sure it would have been omitted or rephrased.

there are ways to be in this country legally. Find one. I do not think it right that illegal immigrants are here not paying taxes and still having many right I must pay for. If you think that we are cruel calling you illegally find a way to be legal or find somewhere else to be. And while you are at it learn our language if you wanna be here so badly. I do not believe in calling any child the b word.

I would call them a citizen of the U.S. because that's what they are if born in the U.S.

I may not approve of illegals coming to the U.S. to plop down babies, but someone born in the U.S. is a Citizen, plain and simple.
