And is does putting a speaker on the floor mean the sound won't travel as far?

Hi.If you have bookshelf type speakers they should be mounted on solid speaker stands. So that when you are seated ,the tweeter should be roughly level with your ears.If this is not possible due to a different configuration the mid -range speaker should be level with your ears.If you have floor standing speakers the same rules apply.If the tweeter is below your ear level the speaker can be mounted on short stands to bring the height up .If the are too high when you are seated you can very carefully tilt the speaker forward to bring the tweeter into alignment with your ears.Hope this helps.

Ideal placement is for the center of the speaker to be at the ear level when you are in your listening position.
