im about to graduate high school and i want to join the USMC. i want to become an officer in the marines eventually, but im thinking about becoming an NCO first, based on the fact that alot marines told me that i would get more experiencem respect, and i would be a better officer that way. HOw long would it take me to reach the rank of Sergeant? and Staff Sergeant after that?? i took 2 years of rotc in high school ( technically 4 years because our classes are twice as long as most) will that make any difference?

I believe that the JROTC will enable you to be promoted to PFC at the completion of boot. Promotion to Sergeant is dependent on MOS, proficiency, PFT scores, performance reoprts, initiative, and luck. I was an adminbody in boot, so made PFC out of boot camp. Then I finished 2nd in my MOS school, so I got promoted to LCPL. I got lucky and went to a air wing unit where most of the people with my MOS were getting out or getting transferred. I kept my nose clean, was willing to take on all of the difficult jobs and a lot of TAD assignments. Made Corporal meritoriously. Then I got meritoriously promoted to Sergeant after 23 months in the Corps. I would go TAD to ground units at Pendleton and would see E-3's with a hash mark (stripe on sleve denoting 4 years of service). My case was pretty unusual, but I saw others who actually got promoted faster, believel it or not.

Everything depends on how well you can excel. If you just go along as one of the crowd you'll be overlooked. You have to set yourself aside from everyone else. But I see it could take possibly two to three years depending on your MOS.
