If you are REALLY sick, then you should stay home (and go to the doctor). The first day of school usually doesn't involve much lesson-wise, so you shouldn't miss much. Plus, if you have something contagious like a cold or virus, you will not pass it onto the rest of the students.

On the first day of school you will probably have you seat assigned, get you textbook, and find out the rules and regulations that you will be expected to follow. You will also find out who your teacher is, and how to find the classrooms. In addition, you might have parent contact cards to fill out. You will be told the teacher's attitude toward homework, lateness, absences (if you are absent on "review day", do you still have to take the test?), and how strictly the teacher will follow the rules in the student handbook. You will find out where to serve detentions and what to do if you have simultaneous detentions from two teachers. You may be given hints on how the teacher structures tests.
