Our living room has a brick fireplace. The previous owners painted it white like the rest of the room. We are going to paint the room, probably a sand or light maple color. The only question is, what to do with the fireplace. Should we just leave it white? Is it possible and worth the trouble to get all the paint off brick? What would look best?

You could easily re-paint it the color you like. Other options include resurfacing it with stone, tile or the like. There are faux panels for this purpose as well, even the brick look.
I personally don't think it's worth it to get the paint off. It's lots of hard work, and then you may not even like the brick that's under the paint! Good luck!

The look you want in the room is up to you. If the white doesn't work for you and you really want the original brick, then that's what you do. Getting the white paint off the fireplace will be labor intensive so decide if it's worth it and if the white can work for you.

It is nearly impossible to get the paint off without sandblasting. I don't recommend that procedure for indoors, if ya get my drift... The paint will remain as clumps of color and/or white-ish stains. Just repaint. Easier and would still look pretty good if'n ya geaux wid da proper cola.

I don't particularly like painted brick, so would box it in with either sheetrock or wood paneling. Then paint the same with a contrasting mantel or no mantel for a more contemporary look. Depends on your decor.
