i would actually suggest to work out at afternoon/night because thats when your cortisol levels are the lowest.(what is cortisol level?http://www.thinkmuscle.com/ARTICLES/jalali/cortisol.htm) Plus you just were asleep for 6-8 hours and didnt eat and food or anything.

If you HAVE to workout in the morning, i would suggest that you eat FIRST and wait at least 30 min. So your body has some energy to work out. And protein after you get back. Im not sure what exactly your trying to do, but if you want to gain muscle a protein shake 30 minutes after working out would be best, along with eating as much good food throught the day that you can.

never do anything on empty stomach - it can lead to many health problems including diabetes.
have something light, some complex carbs like a whole wheat toast with jam or whole grain cereal with milk.
and have a bigger breakfast after working out.
you wont burn more calories or fat by not eating before - your body goes into a little starvation mode at night anyway and if you work out without letting it know its time to wake up and start burning calories (with breakfast) you will burn less calories actually.

technically for best energy levels you should eat before your workout however if you are like me...that just doesn't work. (i get horrible cramps if i don't do cardio on an empty stomach.) but some people don't suffer with this so eat a bowl of high fiber cereal and milk and a peice of fruit. that should give you good energy to get through your workout. if you find out you can't eat before its not a big deal.
