This is about the poorest choice there is for a weapons' cleaning product. There is a reason for the warnings on the container, including wearing gloves when using it for it's intended purpose.
With so many FAR better products on the market that can do a better (AND SAFER) job, leave the brake cleaner in the car port, where it belongs. If one is so poor (or cheap) as to rely on household cleaners, even mineral spirits or naphtha(lighter fluid) are better choices than b.c. solvent.

DO NOT DO NOT use brake cleaner if you do you will have a nice shiny metal colored gun, because brake parts cleaner will remove the bluing from your pistol,DO NOT use brake parts cleaner ,read the side of the can and see what it tells you, that is a very strong cleaner designed to keep brake dust down when you do a brake job on a vehicle and to clean the parts of all lubrication.(grease, oil) try using simple WD40 use it sparingly.DO NOT use brake parts cleaner!!!!!

Yes, but remove the grips first.

I'm guessing you have a really dirty one, or maybe one still in the nCommunist Cosmoline grease. Any good non-residue solvent will work. Be sure to get the nooks and crannies with an old toothbrush. Wear gloves and eye protection!
