I thought it had to do with being robbed and protecting your wedding ring ... like that's where it came from but now its used to mean you can give up on lots of things but not your marriage

I've heard it used like when I guy wasn't allowed to go fishing, "well you can hold up all your fingers except your ring finger"

Either "seven" in sign language, or it represents the East Coast in terms of "gang" signs.
