On flickr I saw someone using a lomo ring flash with their canon 300D. So could I use it with my canon rebel xt? or would it mess up the camera.

Lomo Ring Flash

Since your camera has E-TTL which is off-sensor flash metering. This allows you to use smaller f-stops since the camera controls the flash duration - IF the flash is E-TTL compatible. I doubt the flash in question will work with E-TTL. If your interest is in macro photography you'd do better with a ring flash that is E-TTL compatible.

The best thing you can do is make certain the LOMO flash is fully compatible with your camera other than the E-TTL function.

You should have no problem with it. Most likely the worst that will happen is that it won't work.
