The term used is electro-smog, but I wouldn't be to scared about that. 1 foot is quite a distance when compared to a mobile phone, especially since the radiation is getting exponentially bigger, the closer you get to an electronic device.
Recently phones and the networking cells were declared safe (as I already suspected), so under normal conditions a PC won't give any problem.

Try to lean back a little. Unless you have short arms or a very strange chair, you should be fine. The worst part about being too close to the monitor is your eyes won't adjust properly in distances. It's the same idea as why you aren't supposed to sit too close to the tv. The elasticity of your lens could become less and less workable which means you could lose vision due to it.

yes,yes,yes, bad for the eyes and hands, try some eye exercises, focus close then far for a few minutes out of every hour that you are on the computer.. remember to position yours;f correct;y.. to avoid wrist strain

Sitting too close for me hurts my neck and back -other than that I don't see what other harm there is .

the bright light could be harmful to your eyes. you can buy a shield (made from dark transparent plastic, and which works like sunglasses) to protect your eyes from the glare
