Hey Dogs will be Dogs, I always wanted to say that. The two breeds you mentioned are known for sleeping. A chihuahua is more active of the two. The two can also become hyperactive and play you into the ground. If you don't believe that try getting on the floor and playing with them like your a Dog. I put my money on the Dogs wearing you out and you'll sleep all day.

Chihuahua's are high energy dogs, it's not normal for him to sleep all day and night, take a nap for a couple of hours maybe and sleep thru the night when you go to bed yes, but not all day and night. Maybe you need to change his food to one with protein to give him energy.
Even if you walk him for an hour (too long for a little dog cut it down to 30 mins) in the morning, play with him and walk him at night, he should be up and around playing in between with his toys. if he was bored out of his mind he'd be barking or chewing everything and anything.
When was his last physical exam? Speak to the vet and tell them this, they might want to do some blood work to make sure he's not sick. Remember, dogs hide illness really well, they will never let you know when they are sick.

I have had all kinds of dogs... each breed operates differently.
Right now I have (2) 110 pound Chows..
While large and instantaneously aggressive - they do SOOOOOO love to sleep all the time. It's characteristic of their breed.
To ease your mind - go visit your Veterinarian.
But one thing that can help with a listless or depressed pet is to get your pet a pet. Look at your finances and living situation - and consider another little doggy for your precious one to play with when you're not around.
Peace.

Dogs do sleep a ton. If you are exercising the dog for an hour a day, that is sufficient.
My only concern is that lethargy may be a sign of an overweight dog. Your vet will definitely tell you if this is a problem.

Very normal, especially in the hot weather. As long as the dog shows some interest in going out for a walk, run, etc., then it sounds pretty normal.

I say count your blessing because my 4mos old bischon poodle used to do this as a younger pup.....but those days are far behind....it's ok long as he don't have any health conditions then I wouldn't be concerned.

well maybe because it can get a little tired of doing the activities. here are a little suggestions
~get him more hyped up by feeding it or giving it trees.
~go run with it outside
~try to tease it a little and it might get up.
~ or maybe its the kind of brand of food.

He's fine. Dogs lay around a lot. If he was sick, you would know it.
