I guess that depends what you mean by a map. Huge numbers of maps are produced showing everything from how rising sea levels will affect coastlines to where diseases such as malaria will spread to where different species of butterflies will migrate to.

Some of the most important 'instruments' are quite simply human observations. Reports from millions of people areound the world are used to map the effects of global warming.

The scientists themselves frequently conduct field studies and simply look at what's happening. The actual list of instruments that are available would be pages and pages long, everything from a simple thermometer to some of the world's most powerful computers and satellites..

GRACE satelites. They use extremely sensitive instruments to map the gravity changes. Basically, it takes maps of the earth and doesn't have to deal with optical barriers. Some new ones are coming out, or came out.
