Over the last couple of days, I have done a TON of research over rats and I'm convinced a rat is perfect for me. But I already have a gerbil, had him since February, and I love him so much. I have already talked to my mom about getting a rat, and she actually wants one! But I don't know if I got one, would my gerbil feel left out? I know I will keep spending as much time with him and the rat as possible, I think it will just feel wierd....?

Adding a new pet to your life, when another pet is already in your life is especially hard.

your new pet needs all your attention, because (S)he is just adjusting, and needs to know you're there for him/her.. But your old pet needs to know that you're not forgetting her/him, and you will still spend the same amount of time with him/her. So really, both pets need all your time.

You will have to split up your time, and divide it into equel share of them both.

If you have enough time & space for a rat, *and money* then go for it! But just be sure they both feel loved.

If you've got the time to devote to both your gerbil & your rat/s, sure. We have mice & both male & female rats, plus cats, fish & a guinea pig.
Since you've been caring for your gerbil for most of the year, you're obviously a responsible pet guardian. I've never lived with a gerbil (they're not legal in my state) but I would imagine it's a different experience than a rat.
Please consider getting 2 rats of the same sex, they're very social & will be much happier that way. They'll still be just as friendly towards you, & you'll have fun watching them play together.

Having a rat isn't a good idea, but having two is a great idea! Just make sure you handle them every day. Don't ever let them out to socialize or allow them any access to the gerbil's cage. Rats are predators, and can hurt other small animals. Rats are amazing pets, just make sure you get two if you are going to get any at all. That way they can keep each other company while you spend time with your gerbil. :0)

Rats are fabulous pets- we always had a pet rat in the house while the kids were growing up- for about 25 years! Just make sure you get a separate cage for your new friend! have fun!
