Until recently I would have said no.
I have always lived in a little rural town and the horrible things that you hear about never seemed to happen here, or at least happened to other people.
I spend most of my teens and early twenties quite happily and safely walking home from pubs and clubs at silly o'clock in the morning and never thought twice about it - you didn't need to.
The town has changed over the last few years though, and last week I went out to get something from my car (round the corner) at 10 in the evening when a man attacked me. I managed to fight him off and get back in the house safe, but I was badly shaken.
It seems that this is no longer the town I have grown up in and, yes, I am afraid more now. I certainly won't be leaving the house after dark alone again.
I know it seems like a trivial thing when people are being stabbed and shot, but I think it's a sign of the times.
If you can't feel safe in a little town in the middle of nowhere, where you know all the people in your street, then God only knows what it's like elsewhere.

The only way it has affected me is to strengthen the case for NOT voting the BNP. Other than that, I do not live in fear of crime or anything else. Crime happens, you can take some precautions, but I am not going to go way out of my way.

No not really I just hold an element of vigilance, don't get mobile out, cover pin, look big at cash machines. Actually I love danger and usually find myself in dangerous situations where could be hurt. I used to walk the streets looking for crime so I could beat someone up for committing a crime if I caught them.

The "fear of crime" had no effect on me until I became a "victim of a violent crime" from a vicious attacker who tried to kill me. Now I realize that I must be aware of everything & everybody. It has changed my life for the better because I no longer associate myself with the criminal element as I once did.

It has had the following influences:
* I have studied statistics about different communities, and chosen to seek jobs, place to live, based on competence and professionalism of the police there, and statistics about ability to resist various types of crimes.
* I have studied how come the terrorists are attacking us, what if anything government can do about it, whether or not government is doing good stuff, spoken my mind about what I want done differently
* I have participated in non-government-organizations volunteer efforts to improve the quality of our civilization
* I subscribe to various alert services so that if anyone knows about trouble coming my way, I also know about it
* When there is certain kinds of trouble in my geography, I vary my daily driving and commute routes to minimize my risks, and I make sure I know where the nearest police stations are located
* Over the years, there have been several death threats directed against me, only one of them actually tried (obviously they failed) ... I try to ignore them, so as not to live my life in fear ... if it comes, it comes ... let's enjoy life to the fullest until then
* When I am a witness, I make truthful statements of what I saw, making sure to contact the police when I not directly on the scene ... for example, I looking out window of residence, witness an accident, phone the police & report what I saw
* As technology evolves, I try to educate myself and others with respect to civic responsibilities

I keep an SKS by the bed with a stripper clip out of sight but in easy reach for quick loading. I am not afraid though, I just want to be ready.

it has affected my daughter, she is 16 and will not walk to my local shops, 3 minutes from the house, she would rather walk for 20 minutes to go to different shop as we have a gang that hangs around the shop. she will not walk in our local park with her boyfriend, as she fears being attacked, i think she is being irrational, but she says no she is being safe, she has never been attacked so cant understand why she is like this

I bought a 12 gauge shotgun for home protection. But I wouldn't call it fear, I'd call it being prepared.

Oh ho, crime and the police, another BNP favourite.
No, it hasn't. I don't read the papers because they are full of scaremongering rubbish.
